The fans of Neon Genesis Evangelion (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン) rejoiced in Japan Expo, Paris as the first footage for the upcoming movie Evangelion 3.0+1.0 was unveiled during a stage event with singer Yōko Takahashi (高橋 洋子) and voice actress Megumi Ogata (緒方 恵美).
The 10-minute video showcases Mari (マリ), a character new to the Rebuild series, piloting her Eva in the post-apocalyptic ruins of Paris.
The video reaches its climax as Mari pulls up the Eiffel Tower from the ground and uses it to smash her enemy into pieces. Iconic structures in Paris including the Arc de Triomphe is also shown in the video. With dizzying visuals and high-speed battles, the video certainly boosts up the expectation for the movie.
Directed by Hideaki Anno (庵野 秀明) and produced by Studio Khara, it is the fourth and final film in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy.
“I always have a fantasy of Paris for its stunning and romantic scenery. It is like a dream come true as I can finally set my movie in Paris,” said Anno, who appeared in a video showcased in the event.
The stage event also features the performance of Yōko Takahashi (高橋 洋子), who sang the opening theme song of the anime series “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” (残酷な天使のテーゼ) and the closing theme of Evangelion: Death and Rebirth, “Tamashii no Rufuran” (魂のルフラン).
Megumi Ogata, the voice of the series protagonist Shinji Ikari (碇 シンジ), came as a surprise guest.
“I am really thankful for all the fans who have supported the series for 24 years. As an Eva fan, I am also curious on how the series ends. One day, Anno-san even asked me which ending is better if I was Shiji. As the voice recordings of the movie is not finished yet, I am really excited about it. But I also feel sad to know that it may be my last chance to play Shinji for the anime,” Ogata said.
Evangelion 3.0+1.0 is set to release in Japan’s theatres in 2020.
