In a PlayStation blog, Jim Ryan, President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), announced that they will be partnering with the United Nations’ (UN) Playing for the Planet alliance to battle climate change.
SIE has made continuous efforts in reducing carbon emissions by reducing the power consumption of the PS4. In the blog post, Ryan announced that these efforts will carry on in the company’s next-generation PlayStation consoles. SIE estimates that the new console will be able to suspend gameplay with much lower power consumption than the current PS4, at approximately 0.5W.
In addition to hardware and operations commitments, SIE will also be working alongside the gaming industry and climate experts to encourage developers to create games with sustainability as a theme as well as the potential of raising awareness to the issue through PS VR applications.
