Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura romantic comedy manga has confirmed a new TV anime adaptation in 2022. The new anime series will run for 4 cours in Fuji TV’s Noitamina programme block. The first part will premiere in 2022.
The series tells the story of Ataru Moroboshi, and the alien Lum, who believes she is Ataru’s wife after he accidentally proposes to her. The manga was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday from 1978 to 1987 and was later published in 34 tankōbon volumes. It was adapted into a TV anime aired from 1981 to 1986 with Toshio Furukawa voiced as Ataru and Fumi Hirano voiced as Lum.
The new anime series is a project celebrating the 100 anniversary of Shogakukan, and features a completely new cast, including Hiroshi Kamiya as Ataru and Sumire Uesaka as Lum.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind’s director Hideya Takahashi and Yasuhiro Kimura are directing the new anime at david production, and Cells at Work!’s script writer Yuuko Kakihara is overseeing the series scripts. Naoyuki Asano is designing the characters.
The manga’s author Rumiko Takahashi also revealed a new illustration to celebrate the announcement.
▍Urusei Yatsura Story
In the series, Ataru Moroboshi’s supernatural encounters with the feminine kind all start when he’s chosen to play tag with an alien princess named Lum who invades the earth on her UFO. Ataru has ten days to touch Lum’s horns or aliens will take over the earth! As it turns out, the game of tag is only the beginning of Ataru’s troubles, as he continues to attract strange encounters with otherworldly beings like beautiful snow spirit Oyuki and the sexy crow goblin Princess Kurama!
