Unlike anime series that are based on manga or light novels, original anime series do not always guarantee a sequel or a prequel. There is no telling if the story has truly ended. The yearning for more, the yearning for an answer, and the wait…these are all torments to fans.
Even the loooong-awaited Attack on Titan has got its sequel, but still no one has ever heard anything new about the anime that sort of ended (but not really) years ago. Fans loyal like us deserve a sequel of the following series – in 2017!
1. Neon Genesis Evangelion
Five years. It’s been five years since the last movie was released. The franchise’s latest four-part animation movie series Rebuild of Evangelion is yet to be completed with a fine coda. The last movie, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0, is an unfinished business between producer Hideaki Anno and his sea of loyal viewers.

Despite being a reboot of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Rebuild of Evangelion is a fine-tuned version that manages to haunt fans like the original TV anime does. They both share a similar storyline. Most major events are the same, but the causes are largely different. While the TV version is considered to be revolving around Shinji Ikari’s psychological evolution, the movie adaption must be an advancement since it sheds more lights on other characters’ development. All in all, the movie series has been a great success.

Sadly, production of the Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 halted shortly due to Hideaki Anno’s involvement in Shin Godzilla and his unstable mental health. It was only recently announced that production has already begun. We are already numb to the desperate feeling for our dose of Evangelion, so we do not mind if it takes another five years to make this last part of the movie series – if it means it will be drop dead heart breaking and mind blowing.
2. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
Code Geass took even longer to decide on making a sequel. Nine years. After nine years we are finally getting more of Code Geass! A third sequel was announced in December 2016 at the 10th anniversary event. The scriptwriter even said he would be working hard on the series this year. But when will it release? No one knows.

This coming sequel is unexpected. To be honest, it is the most surprising news in the anime industry recently. The last season of Code Geass probably has the best ending in the history of anime. Hatred is gone, world peace is achieved – all because of Lelouch’s sacrifice of his own reputation and his life. The ending is clever and tear jerking. Such a fine resolution for a plot like this deserves to stay that way.
Let’s be real. No matter how good the ending is, Lelouch is the last person on earth that deserves death. So in the third sequel, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection, the scriptwriter will bring our beloved Lelouch back! This abrupt turns of event has already got many fans very very curious. Nine years are long enough. We need to know what exactly happen after his death in 2017!

Even though we possibly won’t get the sequel this year, the first part of the three-part compilation movie series has been confirmed to be available in this year. Fortunately, there is still something to quench our thirst.
3. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
What happens? What happens exactly? When the TV anime series ended in 2011, the ending was a sad yet reasonable one. It seems perfect for a dark fantasy like this. Everything was comprehensible. But then a sequel movie came out in 2013, and it put fans in miserable state.
The movie, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion, depicts events that happen three years later. The ending leaves many questions to fans. Near the end of the movie, Homura stops Madoka from remembering her true form – Ultimate Madoka. This means, no matter how Homura changes everyone’s memory, there is still a chance Madoka will get her memory back. In this unstable world, something must happen in the future. Is this really an ending? Or is this a part of the disaster that never ends? Thinking about all these questions are truly painful…
After the credit roll, there is one extra scene where Homura dances and falls off a cliff while a hurt incubator is watching. It could be a metaphor of Homura being a “fallen angel” of some sort, but it could also suggest that Homura is trying to kill herself. Does Homura die? This is the question that has been bugging fans for four years.
Therefore, a new work is very much needed!
