Niantic, the creator behind Pokémon Go and Pikmin Bloom, will release its next game, the AR pet game Peridot, on May 9, 2023. Pre-registration for the game also opens today on Google Play and App Store. Players who pre-register or play the game during the first two weeks after its launch will get a launch-exclusive party hat cosmetic for their pets.
Like Pokemon GO, Peridot uses augmented reality technology to layer a fantastical world over real-life maps. However, its focus is largely on care and growth, with each Peridot creature called Dot needing love, food, and play to thrive.
According to Niantic’s David Hollin, creative director for Peridot, every player’s pet will be “100% genetically unique,” inheriting genes from parent Dots that define their color, characteristics, and other cosmetic traits. Players will need to keep their Dots happy, healthy, and loved by feeding them, playing with them, and taking them on adventures.
You can also breed your Dots with Dots from other players. Unlike the collection and battle focus of Niantic’s Pokémon Go, the developer is pitching Peridot as a “charming, comfy game that delivers all the joy of raising a pet, without the mess.”

According to the game’s senior producer, players can raise AR pets “that feel real”. Each Peridot is “100% unique and 100% yours”. This means that each of them will differ in their visual appearance, personality, likes and dislikes, and abilities.
Players can raise their pets from birth into adulthood, breed them with other pets at nests, and create multiple generations of their virtual pets, leading to new discoveries.
