At the “Gintama Post-Festival 2023 (tentative title)” event on March 19, it was announced that an anime adaptation of Gintama‘s spinoff light novel 3-nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-Sensei has been greenlit! In celebration of the announcement, a teaser trailer was revealed featuring Gintoki and Ginpachi-sensei on the same screen!
The spinoff takes place at Gintama High School, where Gintoki Sakata-sensei, a high school teacher with an appearance and personality that doesn’t quite match his position, is in charge of a group of unique students.
This hilarious setting can be found in the teaser trailer, which is filled with references to popular anime series, something usual for what the gag anime is known for, like Jujutsu Kaisen and Spy x Family. No further information has been revealed yet, and more details will be revealed at a later date.
2023 marks the 20th anniversary of the serialization of Gintama, and it is set to be a significant year for the franchise. The original author and other artists related to the series have planned a variety of projects to celebrate this milestone, including the release of this spinoff anime series.
Additionally, the original Gintama anime series will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2026, and various events and projects are being planned for the series’ 20th Anniversary Year.
▍ About Gintama and 3-Nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-Sensei
Hideaki Sorachi first serialized the manga in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2003 to 2018 and later adapted it into an anime series, films, and video games. The series takes place in an alternate version of feudal Japan, where aliens known as the Amanto have invaded and taken over, leading to a ban on samurai swords. The story follows the adventures of Gintoki Sakata, a former samurai who is now the founder of Yorozuya, a small company for odd jobs, where he works alongside Shinpachi Shimura and Kagura.
The spin-off 3-Nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-Sensei is a light novel by Tomohito Ōsaki and follows the story of Gintoki Sakata as a high school teacher at a school for delinquent students. The light novel is a spin-off of the original Gintama series and takes place in an alternate universe. The series features many of the same characters from the original series, such as Shinpachi Shimura and Kagura, as well as new characters unique to the spin-off.
