Phoenix: Eden17, the highly anticipated anime adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s legendary unfinished manga series, has released a new teaser trailer, revealing its debut on the Disney+ streaming service worldwide on September 13.

The teaser trailer shows off characters such as the protagonist Romi, her lover George, the mysterious young boy Com, and the shady handyman Sudarban. And as it ended with a shot of the titular bird soaring across the galaxy, it seemingly looked much different from the earlier trailer of the anime which was shown last year.

Surprisingly, it also announced that a separate film version of the anime is in production, titled “Phoenix: Reminiscence of Flower”. The announcement added that this film version of the story will have an alternate ending to its Disney+ counterpart and that it will premiere in Japan on November 3, 2023.

About Phoenix

Considered one of the greatest manga of all time, Osamu Tezuka’s Phoenix consists of 12 books, each of which tells a separate, self-contained story that takes place in a different era. The plots often go back and forth from the remote future to prehistoric times. The story was never completed, having been cut short by Tezuka’s death in 1989. Since then several of the stories have been adapted into anime series and OVAs, and live-action movies.

The Nostalgia chapter, which the film is based on was published in 1971 and continued forth in Manga Shōnen, 1976 to 1978. It is a science fiction epic about the rise and fall of civilization on the deceptively named desert planet of Eden and one boy’s universe-spanning search for the planet of his ancestors: Earth. The chapter features numerous cameos from other stories branching out to other manga series written and illustrated by Tezuka, such as Black Jack.

Nostalgia also stands out among other parts of the Phoenix manga as being the chapter that went through the most rewrites by Tezuka, having more than 100 pages worth of panels changed between versions.
