Japanese publisher Kodansha (講談社) confirms a new anime adaptation for Hiroaki Samura’s (沙村 広明) Blade of the Immortal (無限の住人) manga. Although details have not yet been released, the anime’s website states the project as a ‘complete anime adaptation’.
▍Story
Blade of the Immortal sets in Japan during the mid-Tokugawa Shogunate period and follows the cursed samurai Manji (卍), who has to kill 1000 evil men in order to regain his mortality.
The immortal, yet desperate samurai meets Rin Asano (浅野 凛), a young girl who wants to hire him to take revenge on Kagehisa Anotsu (天津 影久) for the brutal death of her parents. During the road to revenge, the relationship between Manji and Rin gradually changes.
▍About Blade of the Immortal
Written by Hiroaki Samura, the manga was originally published in Afternoon from June 25, 1993, to December 25, 2012. A 2008 anime television series adaptation was produced by Bee Train and Production I.G.
The manga was also adapted into a live action film, directed by Takashi Miike (三池 崇史 )and starring Takuya Kimura (木村 拓哉) as Manji.
A manga sequel titled Blade of the Immortal – Bakumatsu Arc (無限の住人 ~幕末ノ章~) will debut on 25th May. In this sequel, Manji comes out of retirement to face off against the strongest warriors of the time.
