A stage presentation at the Jump Festa 2020 event on Sunday (22nd December) revealed that the Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma (食戟のソーマ) anime is getting a fifth season that will premiere in April 2020. A new key visual was also revealed for the new season, titled “Shokugeki no Sōma: Gō no Sara” (食戟のソーマ 豪ノ皿).
More information is expected to reveal in the final episode of the fourth season, Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma: The Fourth Plate, which will air on 27th December.
Yoshitomo Yonetani (米たにヨシトモ) is returning to direct the fifth season at J.C. Staff. Shogo Yasukawa (ヤスカワショウゴ) is returning to oversee the series scripts, and Tomoyuki Shitaya (下谷 智之) is returning as character designer. The cast will also reprise their roles from the previous season.
▍About Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma
Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma is shōnen manga series written by Yūto Tsukuda (附田祐斗) and illustrated by Shun Saeki (佐伯俊). Japanese chef Yuki Morisaki (森崎 友紀) also works as a Contributor, providing the recipes for the series. Individual chapters have been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from November 2012 and concluded in June 2019. A total of 36 tankōbon volumes were released by Shueisha in Japan.
The manga has inspired four anime adaptations and the fourth season entitled Food Wars! The Fourth Plate premiered on 12th October 2019.
The story follows a young boy Soma Yukihira, who aspires to become a full-time chef in his father Joichiro’s family restaurant and surpasses his father’s culinary skills, but Joichiro gets a new job that requires him to travel around the world and closes his shop. Joichiro has Soma enroll in Totsuki Saryo Culinary Institute, an elite culinary school where students engage in food competitions called “shokugeki”.
The story follows his adventures as he interacts with his peers and challenges Totsuki’s students as well as others in “shokugeki” competitions. Learning that his father was not only a student of the institute, but also the second seat in the Council of Ten; Soma plans on becoming the best at the academy.
