As the release date for the sequel to the now 17-year-old Valkyrie Series draws near, Square Enix reveals more details about Valkyrie Elysium, the latest title in the series, at a special program amidst Tokyo Game Show 2022 hosted by Susumu Imadachi, producer/director Takahiro Kondo and voice actor Tetsu Inada.
As per the game’s official description, young Valkyrie Maria “is entrusted with the fate of the world by the All-Father, the highest of gods and ruler of all creation. She will face various enemies on her quest and must utilize a variety of weapons, magic, and the power of her allies to prevent Ragnarok — the destruction of the world.”
The developers vouch that players can expect “an epic story, beautiful environments, and new, fast-paced combat that incorporates the Valkyrie series’ classic special attack and combo systems.”
▍Seraphic Gates Returns as Free DLC
The game will be seeing the reoccurrence of the Seraphic Gates that were accessible in the past games as well. An optional gigantic dungeon with only one save point at the beginning, the Seraphic Gates in the previous installments made up for an end-game challenge sort of game mode separate from the main plot. This time around the Seraphic Gates open once again, but with the twist in the genre comes a challenge altogether different.
Players this time around will be expected to clear through dungeons at a brisk pace, as onslaughts of enemies come rushing at Maria, somewhat akin to the Bloody Palace Mode from the Devil May Cry series.
Not much was shown in terms of what challenges the Valkyrie will be faced with, but players can expect high-end bosses and possibly exclusive Einherjar’s to recruit.
▍“Hilde’s Vengeance” Game Mode and Harder Difficulties Unlocked
Along with the Seraphic Gate Free DLC, a separate game mode where players will take control of Hilde, the Valkyrie clad in black. Though the presenters on stream did not mention anything beyond the reveal of the character’s voice cast for her being Yui Ishikawa of 2B fame, we can infer that the game mode will come with a scenario diverging from that of Maria. Stay tuned for more information on this one!
Lastly mentioned in their showing of the line of Free DLC to Valkyrie Elysium, was peculiarly, the addition of two extra difficulties to the game post-launch. All of these features will be added after the launch of the game as free DLC on November 11 for the PS4/PS5 versions and will be included in the Steam version on launch.
▍The Original Valkyrie Profile Returns to PlayStation
The original story of Lenneth returns to PS4 and PS5, as the PSP release of Valkyrie Profile Lenneth was revealed. When the original news of Elysium’s release date dropped back in July fans of the series were disgruntled by the lack of a release of the enhanced port of the original Valkyrie Profile title. The PSP port will be available digitally on the Playstation Store in tandem with the release of Valkyrie Elysium.
Frustratingly the news did not list Steam as a platform for its release, leaving pc users left in the dust for the time being.
