The gothic fantasy action RPG Hunt the Night will launch on April 13 for PC via Steam, GOG, and other stores. Publisher Dangen Entertainment and developer Moonlight Games also revealed a new trailer showcasing its gameplay and retro art style.
The game will also be released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One, but the date is yet to be announced.
In Hunt the Night, players take control of Vesper Blackbone, a member of the Stalkers, tasked with finding the key to reclaiming a perpetual daytime cycle. The move will banish the horrors of The Night, which have been annihilating humanity repeatedly. The game features a top-down retro-style adventure with 2D exploration and intense boss battles, with inspiration from The Legend of Zelda, Castlevania, and Bloodborne.
Players will explore the world of Medhram, where they must complete Hunt missions against terrifying monstrosities, navigate dungeons filled with traps, enemies, and puzzles, and discover the game’s rich lore through the characters, world design, and collectibles.
Hunt the Night also includes a shooting mechanic, allowing players to aim Vesper’s firearm to shoot enemies from afar or blast them up close with a shotgun for major damage. Vesper can also use her dark powers to gain the edge in battles or use a healing rose to rally from a distance.
The gothic pixel art, traditional sprite animation, and dark orchestral soundtrack give Hunt the Night a unique personality in the action-RPG genre, and the main theme is written by the renowned Japanese composer of Secret of Mana, Hiroki Kikuta.
According to the developer, Hunt the Night aims to offer a unique and original lore that is emotionally engaging for players while providing a background directly related to the game’s plot. The game combines classic gems such as The Legend of Zelda, Secret of Mana, and Terranigma with hardcore games like Bloodborne and Dark Souls, with a bit of Silent Hill’s narrative puzzles.
