Breaking the silence since its first reveal trailer from 2021, animation studio MAPPA has revealed that its upcoming anime film, Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Kōjō will premiere on September 15 in Japan.
The announcement comes with a new visual and a 30-second teaser trailer featuring voice actor Junya Enoki as the protagonist Masamune Kikuiri, Reina Ueda as Atsumi Sagami, and Misaki Kuno as Itsumi.
Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Kōjō is MAPPA’s first original anime film project and is directed by Mari Okada, who has previously worked as the screenwriter for prolific titles such as Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, The Anthem of the Heart, and more. Kadokawa Bunko Publishing will also release a separate novel of the film’s story written by Okada on June 13 ahead of the film.
The movie centers around a town where time has completely stopped since an explosion at a steelworks factory that peculiarly sealed all the towns inhabitants within the frozen time, forbidding any from leaving. In an attempt to return to normalcy, the town’s residents are forbidden from changing at all, and so they live out their monotonous everyday lives.
Third-year middle school student Masamune Kikuiri is one such residence of the town, he is led by his enigmatic classmate Atsumi Sagami one day to the fifth blast furnace of the ruined steelworks factory, and there they meet a girl who is wild like a wolf, and who cannot talk. Little did Masamune and the two girls know that their fateful encounter has begun to upset the balance of the world.
