Netflix announced the debut date for the Akuma-Kun anime series based on the acclaimed manga by legendary mangaka Shigeru Mizuki. The anime will debut worldwide on the streaming platform on November 9.
The show is set 30 years after the 1989 Akuma-kun anime and sees Akuma-kun the Second and Mephisto the Third tackling demon-related mysteries. Yūko Mita and Toshio Furukawa will reprise their original roles, Akuma-kun I/Shingo Umoregi and Mephisto II, respectively. Toshio Furukawa will also voice Mephisto III, with Yūki Kaji voicing the protagonist, Akuma-kun II/Ichirō Umoregi.
It was also announced that Hiro Shimono plays the new character Strofire. Additional cast members also include Michiyo Yanagisawa as Etsuko Umoregi, the mother of Mephisto III, and Yusaku Yara in the role of the enigmatic Satan.
The anime is part of the four major projects to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the birth of Shigeru Mizuki together with the upcoming Kitaro Tanjou: GeGeGe no Nazo movie. The series forms part of a legacy left by Mizuki, being adapted into a TV anime series in 1989, two anime films in 1989 and 1990, and several live-action adaptations.
The series revolves around Ichirō Umoregi, who is not just a regular genius boy but also Akuma-kun, a master of black magic. His goal goes beyond regular ambitions, aiming to establish a society where humanity recognizes its true potential and achieves happiness. To achieve this seemingly utopian vision, he plans to bridge hell and earth to harness the power of hell’s strongest demons.
