Not only does Gintama (銀魂) get a live action movie, it will also get a TV drama series consisting of three episodes soon.
Staff members from the movie will reprise their roles in this drama series that focuses on Shinsengumi. It has been confirmed that the movie’s director Yuichi Fukuda will direct this series. The presence of a few characters including protagonist Gintoki Sakata, Shinsengumi members Hijikata Toshirou, Kondou Isao and Okita Sougo has also been confirmed.
Live-action Gintama is set in the Edo period of Japan. The plot is based off the Benizakura Arc（紅桜篇）from the original Gintama. In this arc, Katsura Kotaro is attacked by Kiheitai, a terrorist group lead by Takasgi Shinsuke, who is a childhood friend of Katsura and Gintoki. The Yorozuya trio (Gintoki, Shinpachi and Kagura) then go searching for him and the searching eventually turns into bloodshed. Gintama is adapted from the manga of the same title, which is illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi (空知英秋) and serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump.
TV drama Gintama will air on dTV on 15th July, 2017 and movie Gintama will premiere on 14th July, 2017 in Japan.
