The next King of Iron Fist Tournament is nigh, as today’s State of Play Livestream confirmed the development of Tekken 8.

First showing its elusive face in a brief teaser at the EVO 2022, the Opening of Sony’s broadcast event kicked things off strong with Bandai Namco’s announcement trailer for the next title in the Tekken series. The logo reveals at the tail end of the trailer only listed the Playstation 5 logo, initially suggesting that the title would be an exclusive title. After the State of Play Livestream concluded, the official Twitter account came out to clarify that the game will be coming to the Xbox Series X/S and Steam alongside the PS5.

What to Expect for Tekken 8?

The new teaser showcased mainstays contestants of the King of Iron Fist Tournament, Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima locked in combat amidst a thundering storm, flexing the game engine’s graphic fidelity. Though minimal, snippets of the two characters’ movesets can be seen with cinematic cutscenes playing out at critical moments in the fight, possibly hinting at a more dynamic iteration of the slow-mo mechanics that were present in Tekken 7.

In a separate PlayStation Blog article, the director of the series Katsuhiro Harada elaborated on some of the details shown off in the trailer. “…all the character models, backgrounds, and effects are the same ones that are used in-game. Although this was captured from the story mode, it is not a pre-rendered movie made for the trailer but rather real-time rendered footage, running at 60 frames per second, similar to how you would experience the game versus battle modes. (Of course, some of the effects, dialogue as well as camera angle is currently being updated and may change when the game launches)”.

The teaser did not reveal a release date for Tekken 8, with the end logo, reveal simply answered the question in everybody’s mind with a “stay tuned”.

The last entry in the series, Tekken 7 was released back in 2015, with the game having been updated across its seven-year life span with a myriad of characters being included. Though this initial trailer only showed Jin and Kazuya, it has left fans eager to see other fan favorites make their appearance in this next-generation sequel to the ever-popular 3D fighter.
