Previously announced back in December, the legendary romance visual novel Kanon makes a surprising return on the Nintendo Switch. The game is set to go on retail physically at JPY$5,720 and JPY$5,000 digitally on the Nintendo eShop on April 20, 2023.

Developers Key and Prototype announced that the revival of the visual novel will feature color adjustments to uplift the overall visuals of Kanon from its PC-98 origins, alongside extra features such as abilities to scroll the titles numerous 4:3 original resolution event CGs using touch controls or the left analog stick.

Though the title was not announced to be a full-fledged remaster, the latest version on the Nintendo Switch will include full Japanese voice acting that was previously featured in the Dream Cast and PlayStation 2 iterations. The voice acting for Kanon will follow suit with the voice casts for the game from its last console re-release back on the PSP.

About Kanon

Kanon’s story follows the life of Yuichi Aizawa, a high school student who returns to a city he last visited seven years prior, and he has little recollection of the events from back then. He meets several girls and slowly regains his lost memories.

The gameplay in Kanon follows a branching plot line that offers pre-determined scenarios with courses of interaction and focuses on the five female main characters and their interactions with the player character.

Though Kanon has never seen a release outside of Japan, with the title never getting an official translation, the legacy title has been credited by numerous visual novel developers as being the pioneer of PC visual novels featuring emotional plotlines to its stories.
