The official YouTube channel of Toho started streaming the official trailer for Touken Ranbu: Reimeu, the second live-action movie of Touken Ranbu based on the game franchise under the same name. The movie will premiere in Japanese theaters on March 31, 2023.
New cast members were also revealed in the trailer, alongside brand-new key art. In addition, the trailer previews the movie’s theme song “Destiny” performed by BLUE ENCOUNT.
Touken Ranbu: Reimei is the second live-action movie of Touken Ranbu The Movie, which was released in Japan on January 18, 2019. The movie featured the cast from Stage: Touken Ranbu and was directed by Saiji Yakumo on a screenplay by acclaimed tokusatsu scenario writer Yasuko Kobayashi (Kamen Rider Ryuki).
The first film’s Saiji Yakumo returns to be the director of the second movie and the first film’s line producer Hideyuki Kobashi and the Demonbane game series creator Jin Haganeya newly provide a screenplay.
The story begins in the Heian period when Fujiwara no Michinaga was at the height of his glory. Under secret orders from Michinaga and Abe no Seimei, Minamoto no Yorimitsu, and his men are ordered to defeat Shuten Doji, a demon that lives in Mount Oe.
However, the enemy is actually part of the History Retrograde Army, an army of devils unleashed by revisionist historians who are bent on altering history. But anthropomorphic swords known as Touken Danshi, fight to protect history, and thanks to their efforts, the mission should have been completed without incident…or so it seemed. However, Shuten Doji ends up possessing Yamambagiri Kunihiro, who ends up lashing against his own allies…
Several hundred years later…Tokyo, 2012. On her usual way home. High school student Kotone hears an unfamiliar sound. As if drawn towards it, she sees a mysterious figure fighting an ominous shadow. Kotone is perplexed, but a mysterious voice leads her to speak its name: “Mikazuki Munechika”.
What soon follows are several incidents of residents suddenly losing consciousness across various Japanese cities. To combat this, the Government of Time sends out Nagayoshi Yamambagiri, who then proclaims a special mission is now in place. The objective: Exterminate the History Retrograde Army that has appeared in this time period. The mission also calls for the arrest of Yamanbagiri, who is suspected of involvement in this situation, and possibly destroy him should it be necessary.
