Gamera, one of the most recognizable and classic Kaiju monsters from the 60s, is coming back in a big way with Gamera Rebirth, an animation project looking to bring back this giant beast, and it’s going to debut on Netflix!
The series will be six episodes long, focusing on the beast Gamera as it goes up against five different Kaijus, presumably with each episode featuring a different Kaiju. The website and Netflix Anime also released a teaser for one of the Kaijus Gyaos, a terrifying supersonic bird that feeds on humans, and was the second enemy Gamera ever faced off against.
The animation series currently has no release date but will be streamed globally on Netflix when it’s ready.
▍ About Gamera
Gamera is a Japanese Kaiju that debuted back in 1965 from the film Gamera, the Giant Monster. Originally made in the wake of Godzilla’s popularity, Gamera became its own icon in Japanese media, with several depictions of this beast changing from a destructive monster, to something of a protector of humanity and children.
The create can be seen in films joyfully being friendly to all, and will often fight battles for mankind protecting it from other dangerous Kaiju. The monster is based loosely on Genbu, one of the four sacred animals from the Chinese constellation.
Gamera has appeared in 12 films from the Showa to Heisei era, and it will have been almost 17 years since we’ve last seen this friend to children in a major project, when it finally returns in Gamera Rebirth.
