Cells at Work! is Getting a Live-Action Film

The popular comedy manga series Cells at Work! by Akane Shimizu is getting a live-action film adaptation, with an original story never seen in the series.

The film is directed by Japanese Academy Award-winning director Hideki Takeuchi, who is best known for his work on the movie Tonde Saitama. The script is handled by Yūichi Tokunaga, who worked on the live-action adaptation of Kaguya-sama: Love is War.

The director Hideki Takeuchi expressed his excitement for the upcoming live-action adaptation, he shared that the idea of bringing the story of cells to life on screen was initially surprising, but also filled him with anticipation. He hopes to showcase the daily lives of cells in the human body through a grand and entertaining scale filled with laughter and learning.

The story of Cells at Work! is a unique take on the human body, where the various cells that make up the body are personified as unique characters. The manga series follows the daily lives of these cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, as they work together to keep the body healthy and fight against diseases.

The cast of the film has not yet been announced, and more details will be revealed at a later date.

About Cells at Work!

Hataraku Saibō is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Akane Shimizu. The manga was serialized in Kōdansha’s shōnen manga magazine Monthly Shōnen Sirius from March 2015 to January 2021. An anime television series adaptation by David Production premiered on July 8. A second season premiered in January 2021. The manga was published in English as Cells at Work! by Kodansha Comics USA from November 2016 to August 2021.

The manga follows the daily lives of anthropomorphic cells within the human body, with a focus on the red blood cell AE3803 and the white blood cell U-1146. The series depicts the cells’ interactions and their battles against pathogens and other threats to the body, as well as exploring the workings of the human body in an informative and humorous way.
