During its AnimeJapan2023 show, Netflix revealed a new series titled Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune, a new sci-fi series about a young man joining a space military organization in hopes of changing his life for the better!
The series is an adaptation of Carlo Zen’s novel Yakitori (ヤキトリ) illustrated by so-bin in 2017. If you recognize Carlo Zen’s name, that’s because he’s the author of The Saga of Tanya the Evil! The anime’s also being directed by Hideki Anbo who worked on various video games including Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Pokemon Masters, and 2020’s Resident Evil 3. The music’s also being handled b Ken Ishii, a DJ, and producer most notable for their music in the Techno genre, which you can hear in the show’s trailer!
The anime is set to premiere on Netflix in May later this year.

In the distant future, space-faring humans have been defeated and humiliated, relegated to now a subservient class of people to races of aliens. Despite people of different races, nationalities, and backgrounds coming together for once, humanity was unable to imagine the unimaginable battle it’d face on mars.
Not content with staying boxed into his closed Japanese community, Akira applies to join the planetary orbiting infantry called Yakitori, at the recommendation of the recruitment officer Cook Pafkin.
