Niantic’s Pokémon GO announced the arrival of a thrilling new feature, Shadow Raids, coming as part of the Rising Shadow event commencing on May 22.
In this event, worldwide trainers will face the challenge of reclaiming gyms taken over by Team GO Rocket and their Shadow Pokémon. The formidable Shadow Mewtwo is also making its return, giving you the chance to encounter the coveted Shiny Shadow Mewtwo.

In the Shadow Raids, the audacious Team GO Rocket has innovated a new strategy. They’ve found a way to leave Shadow Pokémon to defend gyms, an unprecedented challenge that trainers will face in Pokémon GO.
But these aren’t just any Shadow Pokémon, as Shadow Mewtwo will be making its return, setting up a captivating challenge for trainers around the world. Also, for the first time in Pokémon GO history, trainers will have the chance to encounter Shiny Shadow Mewtwo if lucky. Shadow Mewtwo will appear in five-star Shadow Raids from May 27 at 10:00 a.m. to May 28 at 8:00 p.m. local time.
From May 22 at 10:00 a.m. to May 28 at 8:00 p.m. local time, a majority of Gyms will host these new Shadow Raids. Various Pokémon such as Shadow Poliwag, Shadow Machop, Shadow Bellsprout, and Shadow Beldum will be featured in one-star Shadow Raids, while three-star Shadow Raids will include Pokémon like Shadow Bayleef, Shadow Quilava, and Shadow Croconaw. A spike in Team GO Rocket activity on May 27 will see them taking over all raids.
Alongside Shadow Raids, players will also encounter Pokémon GO traditional Raids featuring Pokémon such as Clefairy, Tentacool, and Marill in one-star raids; Magneton, Lapras, Mawile, and Empoleon in three-star raids. Five-star raids will feature Regigigas and Tapu Fini, while Mega Raids will present Mega Pinsir and Mega Altaria. Trainers may even encounter shiny versions of these Pokémon.
The event also includes increased encounters in the wild with Pokémon such as Ekans, Golbat, Koffing, Houndour, Poochyena, Stunky, and Skorupi, with the rare chance of encountering Hisuian Qwilfish or Scraggy. The event bonus also includes more frequent appearances of Team GO Rocket at PokéStops and in balloons.
▍Seasonal 10 Special Research Master Ball
In addition to the launch of Shadow Raids, Niantic has announced the upcoming inclusion of the Master Ball. This top-tier Poké Ball offers an unprecedented level of performance, promising a 100% catch rate for any Pokémon encountered in the wild, through Lure Modules, after Raid Battles, or while using the Daily Adventure Incense.
Throughout Season 10: Rising Heroes, free Special Research will be available for Trainers. You can claim the Special Research until the end of Season 10: Rising Heroes on June 1.
