Square Enix and Taito officially launch Space Invaders: World Defense for iOS and Android devices. Now available globally, this new augmented reality (AR) game for smartphones incorporates Google’s latest ARCore Geospatial API and Streetscape Geometry API. The release marks the 45th anniversary of Space Invaders, a video game franchise recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest-running series.
Space Invaders: World Defense transforms the iconic space shooter into an immersive AR experience. Players worldwide can protect Earth from invaders, directly interacting with their real-world surroundings. The game dynamically incorporates local geography and structures, including buildings and bridges, adapting to real-time location, time, and weather data. As players traverse their local environments to defeat invaders, it’s possible to unlock special power-ups, climb area-specific leaderboards, and share their achievements on social media.

Powered by Google’s ARCore Geospatial API, Space Invaders: World Defense leverages the user’s environment to create a real-time 3D model, integrating buildings, bridges, and other structures around the player into the game, adapting to the player’s location, time, and local weather conditions for a truly immersive experience.
The Streetscape Geometry feature enables the acquisition of 3D model data of structures within a 100m radius of the player’s current location. Enhancing the AR experience by making objects interactable, allowing for occlusion expression, reflecting real-world buildings, and attaching AR objects to specific structures.
