The live-action film adaptation of Yuki Andō’s (安藤ゆき) The World of Machida-kun (町田くんの世界) manga recently releases a teaser video, highlighting the cast’s comments on the film.
Director Yūya Ishii (石井裕也) reportedly saw over 1,000 auditions before settling on newcomers Kanata Hosoda (細田佳央太) to cast Hajime Machida (町田 一) and Nagisa Sekimizu (関水渚) to portray Nana Inohara (猪原 奈々). Ishii is best known for his 2013 movie The Great Passage for which he won best director at the 2013 Japanese Academy Awards. Ishii also co-wrote the film, together with screenwriter Shô Kataoka (片岡翔).
Renowned actors and actresses are also invited to join as Hajime’s classmate, including Takanori Iwata (岩田 剛典) as Yū Himuro (氷室雄), Mitsuki Takahata (高畑充希) as Sakura Takashima (高嶋さくら), Atsuko Maeda (前田敦子) as Lila Sakae (栄りら).
Other characters include Erika Toda (戸田恵梨香) as Sayaka Yoshitaka (吉高葵), Kōichi Satō (佐藤浩市) as Hino (日野) and Nanako Matsushima (松嶋菜々子) as Momoka Machida, Machida’s mother.
Distributed by Warner Bros. Japan, The film will open in Japan cinema on June 7.

The story follows Hajime Machida, a high school student who despite his elite appearance is not good at sports or academics, but whose seemingly limitless kindness always helps people around him. With a low self-esteem, Machida always put himself down. However, the people that surround his daily life are there to remind him that there is no need to change as people love Machida just the way he is.
The World of Machida-kun manga first appears in Shueisha’s Bessatsu Margaret magazine in March 2015 and ended the series in April 2018. It has a total of seven tankōbon.
