In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Doraemon franchise, TOHO announced today (12th December) that the 3DCG anime film “Stand by Me Doraemon” (スタンド・バイ・ミー ドラえもん) released in 2014 is getting a sequel titled “Stand By Me Doraemon 2” (スタンド・バイ・ミー ドラえもん 2). This film will premiere in Japan theatre on 7th August 2020.
Most of the staff and cast from the previous film are returning. Takashi Yamazaki (山崎貴) is handling the scripts and co-directing with Ryuichi Yagi (八木竜一).
▍Story
The story is based on a previous short anime film “Doraemon: A Grandmother’s Recollections” (おばあちゃんの思い出). The film will also continue the love story of Nobita Nobi (野比のび太) and Shizuka Minamoto (源静香) in the previous film.
▍Message from Takashi Yamazaki and Ryuichi Yagi
■ Takashi Yamazaki (山崎貴)
“A Grandmother’s Recollections” (おばあちゃんの思い出) is truly a masterpiece, it is one of the favorite stories of most of the people. Is it possible to somehow expand “Stand by Me Doraemon” around it? And the project started from here. To be honest, it was really difficult. We brainstormed, again and again, to figure out the direction of the film. At last, we decided to build on the exact words from grandma to Nobita: “I want to see your bride, even with just a glance”.
It is a great honor to be able to release this film in the 50th anniversary year of the franchise. The film is still in the middle of production, but we and the staff will try our best to present a wonderful movie in the summer.
■ Ryuichi Yagi (八木竜一)
I center the movie around the idea of “one-day”. A seemingly ordinary day sometimes can be extremely important when you recall it later. In this movie, the day Nobita goes to see his grandma is surely an important day for Nobita. It may be a hard day, but it may also become a good memory later.
“Stand By Me Doraemon 2” depicts such “one-day” that all generations who love Doraemon can sympathize with. I hope you will enjoy the special “one-day” next summer.
