During a live stream on 8th March, the “Bungo Stray Dogs” franchise confirmed that its light novel spin-off “Bungo Stray Dogs BEAST” (文豪ストレイドッグス BEAST) is getting a live-action movie. Two new stage plays were also confirmed for 2020 and 2021.
“Bungo Stray Dogs BEAST” is originally a light novel by Kafka Asagiri (朝霧カフカ), which is set in an alternate universe, with Ryunosuke Akutagawa (芥川 龍之介) joining the Armed Detective Agency, and Atsushi Nakajima (中島 敦) acting as a subordinate in the Port Mafia.
Under the mentorship of Sakunosuke Oda (織田 作之助), Akutagawa strives to confront the Port Mafia’s Boss, Osamu Dazai (太宰治), and free his younger sister, from the organization. The mission leads him to an intense feud with the Port Mafia’s “White Reaper”, Atsushi Nakajima. The light novel also inspires a manga adaptation by Shiwasu Hoshikawa (星河シワス).
The premiere date of the live-action movie is not yet revealed. The franchise stage play’s actor Shōhei Hashimoto (橋本祥平) and Yūki Torigoe (鳥越裕貴)will reprise their respective roles of Ryūnosuke Akutagawa and Atsushi Nakajima.
▍Two New Stage Plays
The Untold Origins of the Detective Agency and Osamu Dazai and the Dark Era, the second and third volumes of Kafka Asagiri and Sango Harukawa’s (春河) “Bungo Stray Dogs” novel series, are inspiring the story of the “Bungo Stray Dogs Hashigaki” (文豪ストレイドッグス 序) play for 2020.
The 2018 anime film “Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple” also gets a stage play of the same name in 2021.
