Epic Games today (14th May) reveals a demo video for Unreal Engine 5, the latest technology which is able to generate outstanding realistic graphics in real time on next-generation consoles like the PlayStation 5, high-end PCs, and even mobile devices.
The reveal was introduced with “Lumen in the Land of Nanite,” a real-time demo running live on PlayStation 5, to showcase Unreal Engine technologies that will free creators to reach the highest level of real-time rendering detail in the next generation of games and beyond.

The video previews two of the new core technologies that will debut in Unreal Engine 5: Nanite and Lumen.
Nanite deals with dynamic rendering products, which allow creators to present massively detailed scenery, while Lumen is a new pipeline for dynamic scene illumination, allowing for more life-like lighting of digital assets. These technologies enable creators to author all the content in the game at its full, movie quality level of resolution.
“The aim here is to get to a starting point with the first version of Unreal Engine 5, which enables us to build a next-generation platform for completely seamless, continuous worlds of unlimited scale,” Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney explained in the video. “Nanite is key to achieving the geometry detail there, Lumen is key to being able to imagine the lighting and these huge open environments.”
Unreal Engine 5 will be first available to preview early in 2021 with full access expected by the end of that year. “Fortnite” will migrate to the new engine at some point between those two dates.
