Well, 2020 is finally over. It has been one insanely long, grueling, and isolated ride, but we made it. Along the way, we have installed and uninstalled countless games on our mobile devices and emulators. Here, we’d like to use this chance to look back at some of our favorite games that were released this year, specifically new original games and games that were released in English!

QooApp Editor’s Choice:

▍Disney Twisted Wonderland
QooApp Rating:4.7/5

Ever since the game was first announced in February 2019, Disney Twisted Wonderland became a highly anticipated title. Taking all the iconic villains from Disney and reimagining them through the mind of Yana Toboso (枢やな), creator of Black Butler, the characters of Twisted Wonderland was quite a sight to behold.

Although the gameplay may be simple and repetitive, the game is incredibly well-received due to the breath-taking character designs.

Disney Twisted Wonderland earns a seat on our list because of the sheer amount of hype it generated and the massive fan-base the characters have garnered.

▍Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent
QooApp Rating:4.0/5

Square Enix Reveals Story for Octopath Traveler - Champion of the Land

It is definitely rare to see a single-player game in a mobile game list, but Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent definitely belongs on this one.

20102805585546

A prequel to the critically acclaimed Octopath Traveler, the mobile game inherits all the classic JRPG experience of the original game and masterfully integrates the iconic mobile gacha experience without breaking the gamer’s experience.

 大陸的霸者戰鬥

We highly recommend you play this game with the audio on because despite being a mobile game, Square Enix delivers its quintessential audio experience with scores that match the original game.

If you want an RPG to play, you really don’t have to look any further.

▍Zold: Out
Zold:Out~鍛冶屋の物語
QooApp Rating:4.0/5

20100904194641

Not the most hyped game at all, in fact, the game just seemingly launched in Japan out of nowhere, but Zold: Out is definitely a diamond in the rough.

Whilst the game may look like many other typical mobile strategy gacha games, the gameplay is much more than what meets the eye. The greatest part of the game lies within the strategy elements of the combat system. Players play as an owner of a blacksmith store, crafting weapons that can be used in combat as cards. Players will have to create different decks depending on the character and the stage they’re challenging. Put everything together and you have a beautifully complex-yet-entertaining system that can keep you hooked for hours.

One downside to the game is that events can become incredibly “grindy”. Players have complained that previous events were just way too much work to enjoy.

▍Re:Zero Lost in Memories
QooApp Rating: 4.4/5

Have you ever asked yourself “What would I do if I was in that situation?” when watching an anime? Well, Re:Zero Lost n Memories is pretty much that. The game allows players to explore different routes by making different decisions from that Subaru made in the series.

Re:從零開始的異世界生活 Lost in Memories

Though the game is only available in Japanese (as of this moment), there’s still a certain attraction to the game that plays with your curiosity. One thing you have to mention is that the game actually invited the series’ creator, Tappei Nagatsuki (長月 達平), to write many of the scenarios in which players can explore! Fans of the series already know that the decisions made in the series are quite high stakes, so be prepared when you play…

Re:從零開始的異世界生活 Lost in Memories

Asides from the Story Mode, the game features a pretty basic turn-based combat system. Whilst the system itself isn’t really anything worth bragging about, the skill animations are quite impressive.

Re:從零開始的異世界生活 Lost in Memories(if anything, Rem is good reason enough to play this game)

▍Project Sekai Colorful Stage Feat. Hatsune Miku

Basically, everything you need in a mobile rhythm game put together. Project Sekai Colorful Stage Feat. Hatsune Miku features nice tracks, great characters, an interesting story, and most importantly, a control scheme that works well on mobile.

20062915455218

The love-child between Sega and Craft Egg, Project Sekai Colorful Stage Feat. Hatsune Miku has many references to BanG Dream! Girls Band Party, from the general UI to many of the rhythm gameplay visual elements, but despite all this, the game manages to differentiate itself completely due to the music, the characters, and the story.

As you would expect, the game features different difficulty settings that cater to different gamers. Whether you’re a Hatsune Miku fan or a rhythm game nut, Project Sekai Colorful Stage Feat. Hatsune Miku has something to keep you coming back for more.

Game of the People

Remember when we asked you to vote for your favorite game? In case you missed it, the result was an overwhelming victory for miHoYo’s Genshin Impact!

20123112501519

▍Genshin Impact
QooApp Rating:4.3/5

20072703175133

Perhaps one of the most controversial and most talked-about mobile games of 2020, Genshin Impact is one of those games where you either love or you just simply don’t get it.

When the gameplay was first announced, many people focused on the resemblance it had with Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Although miHoYo made many changes to address these issues, at launch, many aspects of the game still felt like BoTW. Views and opinions on the game differed, some players enjoyed the exploring aspect of the game whilst others complained that the world felt very empty and bland.

But looking past all that, the matter of fact is, Genshin Impact successfully won its way into the hearts of many players. Each unit in the game feels unique and can be used in a lot of the content in the game. The game’s overall pace is slow with the gacha being more on the expensive side and the rates are not the most generous of gacha games, but with how balanced the game is, a lot of the 4-star units are more than capable of clearing all the content the game has to offer. The recent major update also introduced a plethora of new content for players to indulge in.

The graphics, without a doubt, is one of the best of the games released this year. Whether you play on Mobile, PC, or console, you can’t argue that the graphics are incredibly impressive. It really isn’t hard to see why the game dominated the polls. Now they only need to add a feature to let me pet Paimon…

That’s our selection of the top games of 2020. Do you agree with our list? Is there another game from 2020 that you feel deserves to be mentioned? let us know in the comments!
