The official Twitter account for Naoya Matsumoto’s Kaiju No. 8 manga announced that an anime adaptation is currently in production! The announcement comes with a new teaser visual and trailer giving us a sneak peek at the long-awaited anime series.
The teaser doesn’t really offer much visually as the video shows numerous places within Japan as the number 8 flashes in the middle of the screen, ending with a glimpse of a Kaiju in the distance destroying a city. No further was given yet, such as the release schedule, cast, staff, or animation studio, but it definitely makes as one of the most anticipated anime announcement of the year
▍About Kaiju No. 8
Naoya Matsumoto started seralizing Kaiju No. 8 on Shueisha’s Shōnen Jump+ application and website since July 2020, with its chapters collected in seven tankōbon volumes as of July 2022. The manga receive nurmerious popularity on Shōnen Jump+ and has reached over 100 million views in 2022. The manga also had over 8 million copies in circulation as of August 2022.
The story is set in modern day Japan, where monsters known as kaiju regularly attack the populace with the Japanese Defense Force tasked with killing them. The protagonist Kafka Hibino tries to join the force as his hometown was destroyed by kaiju when he was a child. Though Kafka fails his entrance exam multiple times, he gains the ability to transform into a humanoid Kaiju when a Kaiju enters his body and uses that power to join the defense force and fight alongside his comrades.
