Live action Gintama (銀魂) is coming out tomorrow (13th July), and the original manga is coming to an end soon. In an interview with Japanese media Oricon News, the writer and mangaka Hideaki Sorachi (空知 英秋) revealed his future plan and how far the manga is from the ending.

“The time for the ending has been decided”, the mysterious mangaka who always portrays himself as a gorilla said, “the final story, except for the details, has also been decided”. Although he did not talk about exactly how much of Gintama is left, he did say it is proceeding towards the end very steadily.

Sorachi also admitted that he had been sidetracked until he started the ending, and what he is doing now is in fact “the goal decided from the very beginning”.

Starting 2002 with his first work Dandelion, the 38 year old artist has spent most of his youth drawing manga. When being asked about the plans after Gintama finishes, he did not hesitate to say that he would start drawing another manga very soon.

“If I don’t draw manga, I am just garbage that can do nothing in this society (laugh)”.

Sorachi explained that it was only through manga he could have contact with the world, as he has been a mangaka for so long that there is no turning back.

Of course, he did not reveal anything about his future manga. Since the details for Gintama’s future are yet to be decided, it seems like the manga will still last for quite a while, and the new work will not happen in near future.
