FrontGate Fighters is a delightful indie game for android devices that combines the retro style of the Classic Street Fighter games with a simple tap-and avoid system. Players are put in the role of an unfortunate individual stuck between two fighters throwing all kinds of different skills and fireballs at each other.
Asides from dodging fireballs and lasers, players will also have to deflect objects that the fighter throws at each other. Every successful deflect will reward players with gems that act as in-game currency. These gems are quite useless early on in the game, but as you progress through the game and level up by completing challenges, you’ll be able to unlock new power-ups and new fighters to change the flow of the game.
Despite its retro art style, FrontGate Fighters has some pretty bold character designs and effects. From laser beams to mini explosions, each character has a few unique skills that they will use at random which will definitely catch players off guard the first couple of times.
Thoughts
The game idea is simple-yet-brilliant. The simple controls and system makes it easy for players to pick up, but as you progress, the game gets incredibly hard with the different unique skills each fighter has. The difficulty is well adjusted in a way that makes you want to continue on to beat your previous high-score. Together with their challenges, players feel a real sense of achievement when they finally successfully dodge a unique skill for the first time.
With that being said, there are certain times which the game creates seemingly impossible scenarios for the players, but all-in-all FrontGate Fighter is worth a shot for those who are looking for a fun and challenging casual game.
