Developed by Sega, supervised by the original owner Atlus, Dx2 Shin Megami Tensei Liberation (D×2 真・女神転生リベレーション) is an upcoming mobile spin-off of the latter’s 25-year-old Shin Megami Tensei (真・女神転生) franchise. It is scheduled for release this year for free. At Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2017, Sega let visitors get a glimpse of the gameplay at the trial corner.

Sega invited Psycho-Pass writer Makoto Fukami for the screenplay and Ace Attorney character designer Kasuga Takeshi for the character artworks. The heroes in this new title are called Liberators who possess a devil downloader called Dx2. They can summon devils and make use of the latter’s power to protect the world. Like the previous works in the series, the male protagonist is nameless.

The other party that also owns Dx2 is Acolytes. The organisation is the main enemy of the series.

The system is faithful to Shin Megami Tensei’s classic turn-based RPG model – negotiation, devil fusion, skill inheritance centric. Each map consists of a chapter of the story and different story quests. Players are able to choose from normal, hard, and maniac difficulty. It costs stamina to enter a quest.

Players lead a team of four devils and take turn to fight against other devils. Each one of them can be classified into seven attributes. They may be resistant/prone to certain types of attack due to their attributes. Damages received are borne by the members instead of the leader. If an attack strikes an enemy’s weakness, players can get a bonus turn. Attacks use up a devil’s MP, but the MP gets a small replenishment after a successful turn. Players are able to pass a turn when necessary.
Some floors even allow players to move around in three different modes.

A devil can be acquired through negotiation and it has skills that can be awakened. To get a devil, players can spend some materials to fuse their existing devils to create a new one.

A news app about Dx2 updates is launched for Android today. The iOS version is coming soon. Pre-registration date is yet to be confirmed.
