Science Saru animation studio announced The Heike Story, a TV anime based on the classic Japanese epic The Tale of the Heike centering the rise and fall of the Taira clan in the 12th century. The anime is set to debut in January 2022.
The anime story will follow Hideo Furukawa’s translated modern version. It is told by the anime’s original character Biwa (CV: Aoi Yuki), a blind traveling minstrel, who meets Taira no Shigemori (CV: Takahiro Sakurai), heir to his clan. Bearing a supernatural sight that can perceive ghosts, Biwa proclaims to him a prophecy of his clan’s downfall.
Naoko Yamada is directing the anime at Science Saru, the studio who produces Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! and Japan Sinks: 2020. Reiko Yoshida is writing the script and manga artist Fumiko Takano is credited with original character design.
